Steeped in history, Grandhotel Giessbach at the eponymous Giessbach Falls, whose masses of water plunge spectacularly into Lake Brienz, is a world of its own. Surrounded by imposing nature, this Belle Époque hotel amazes with its idyllic location as well as a garden with over 100 historic ornamental plants and vegetables.
Resurrected: The former park of the Grandhotel Giessbach came to life in 2014, and as of 2019, work has begun to repurpose the historic vegetable garden. From the ProSpecieRara Foundation's collection, the garden enchants with a comprehensive collection of dahlias, hydrangeas and astilbes.
With its opening in 1875, the Grandhotel was one of the pioneers of Swiss tourism. Even today, the magnificent building exudes the splendid charm of that time. Partly due to the oldest funicular railroad in Europe, which is still in operation.
Despite over 150 years of history, the Grandhotel Giessbach is not gathering dust. The 75 rooms, restaurants and seminar rooms are modern without ignoring their legacy. The same applies to the extensive grounds of the Giessbach Nature Park.
The non-profit foundation "Giessbach dem Schweizer Volk" (Giessbach for the Swiss People) was established in 1983 by Franz Weber to save the historically valuable grand hotel from the Belle Epoque period, which is worthy of protection, from demolition and to preserve the beautiful piece of home above Lake Brienz for the Swiss people as a common heritage.
